Mr. Knox

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the number of places of historic interest open to the general public under public ownership in Scotland; what is the distribution of these properties throughout the Scottish regions; and how many persons visited these properties over the most recent 12-month period for which figures are available.

In 1978 there were open to the public 281 historic monuments in the care of the State, including properties in guardianship as well as those in Crown ownership. Their distribution by region is shown in the table below. Records of the numbers visiting these properties are not available but ticket admissions in 1978 at the 76 monuments at which charges are made were 2,361,200.
