HC Deb 03 April 1979 vol 965 cc699-700W
Mr. Roy Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what representations she has received from the Physical Education Association concerning the reduction of time allowed in schools for physical education; and if she will make a statement.

Miss Margaret Jackson

My right hon. Friend has received no such representations from the physical education association.

Mr. Roy Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science, in furtherance of the Government's campaign to stress the importance of exercise and physical fitness, if she will consider issuing guidance to local education authorities pointing out the need for an adequate amount of time to be allowed in the school curriculum for physical education.

Miss Margaret Jackson

The amount of time devoted in schools to particular subjects is a matter for the local education authorities and the schools themselves. My Department issued a circular about the development of sporting talent in children of school age in December 1978. My right hon. Friend does not consider that further guidance on physical education is necessary at present.
