asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many deer farmers received fencing grants in Scotland; and what were the corresponding figures for the past 10 years.

I assume that the hon. Member is referring to assistance which deer farmers throughout the United Kingdom may receive for approved work under the farm capital grants schemes. My Department has received a number of applications and enquiries, including fencing proposals, and these are being considered. No claims for grants have so far been received.

Interest in deer farming has increased over the past 10 years. No records are kept centrally of the numbers of deer farms in Scotland.
