HC Deb 03 April 1979 vol 965 cc650-1W
Mr. Mudd

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many workers in Cornwall, in an average week in 1978, both as a figure and as a percentage of the total workforce were in receipt of temporary employment subsidy; and to what extent this percentage is in excess of, or falls below, the average percentage for all other development areas.

Mr. Golding

, pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 2 April 1979], gave the following answer:

I regret that information is not available in the precise form requested and could only be obtained at disproportionate cost.

However, as at 28 March the cumulative number of jobs supported by TES in Cornwall since the inception of the scheme in August 1975 was 4,956. This represents about 4 per cent. of employees in employment in Cornwall, as given by the 1976 annual census of employment, the most recent for which figures are available. Nationally, the TES scheme has supported about 2 per cent. of employees in employment between its inception and 28 February 1979.

Mr. Mudd

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will indicate the numbers of placing under (a) work experience and (b) job creation projects in the county of Cornwall in 1978, both as a number and as a percentage of the actual workforce and indicate by what figure this percentage exceeds, or is lower than, the percentage for other development areas.

Mr. Golding

, pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 2 April 1979], gave the following answer:

In 1978 the following special measures were in operation. The work experience programme, which ended on 31 March 1978, the job creation programme, which ended on 31 December 1978, and the youth opportunities programme and the special temporary employment programme, both of which began on 1 April 1978 and are still in operation.

I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission, which is responsible for all these schemes, that separate figures for WEP in the county of Cornwall are not available but in the period 1 January 1978 to 31 March 1978, 980 placings were made in Devon and Cornwall. Statistics for JCP are not available in terms of the numbers placed, but 31 projects were approved in 1978 for Cornwall, providing 270 places. In the period 1 April to 31 December 1978, about 1,450 young people were placed under the youth opportunities programme in Cornwall, and about 75 adults were placed under STEP. It is not possible to relate these figures to the working population for Cornwall.
