HC Deb 02 April 1979 vol 965 c474W
Mr. Younger

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if, pursuant to his answer of 22 February 1978, Official Report, column 688, he will give a breakdown of expenditure on other environmental services for the years 1970–71, 1973–74, 1979–80 and 1982–83.

Mr. Millan

The information is as follows:

column 407, he will give the latest figures of (a) the number of persons applying for legal aid, (b) the number of applications granted, (c) the total cost and (d) the equivalent figures for 1970–71, 1973–74 and 1974–75.

Mr. Harry Ewing

The number of applications for criminal legal aid in the year 1977–78 was 41,136, the number granted 32,371 and the total cost £4.022 million. I regret that the first of these figures was wrongly stated in the answer which I gave to the earlier question from the hon. Member for Aberdeenshire East (Mr. Henderson). The figures for the other years requested are:

Applications Number granted Cost
£ million
1970–71 13,683 10,853 0.479
1973–74 19,038 15,138 1.078
1974–75 21,190 17,465 1.310

Legal aid was extended to the district courts as from 1975–76.
