HC Deb 24 October 1978 vol 955 c937W
Mr. Lomas

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the ratio of administrators to patients in the National Health Serevice in 1974 and at the latest available date.

Mr. Moyle

There is no way of distinguishing "administrators" from the general class of administrative and clerical staff as there is no agreed definition of an administrator for this purpose.

At 30th September 1974 there were 180 administrative and clerical staff per 100,000 population in England and at 30th September 1977, the latest date for which figures are available, there were 210 administrative and clerical staff per 100,000 population in England.

Since 30th September 1977 there has been further progress in the management costs reduction exercise which could affect the above ratio.
