§ Mr. Dudley Smithasked the Secretary of State for Transport whether, in view of the growing number of protests about damage caused to the environment by heavy lorries in town centres, residential districts and village areas, and the need to allay public disquiet on the subject, he will seek to take new initiatives to remedy the situation.
§ Mr. HoramLast year's White Paper on Transport Policy set out the measures we are taking to reduce the impact of lorries on built-up areas. These include the construction of by-passes, traffic regulation by local authorities, and a project for development of a quieter heavy goods vehicle. In addition, we are developing 793W more effective means of controlling diesel smoke. We are always ready to consider practical suggestions for further measures.
