HC Deb 24 October 1978 vol 955 cc765-6W
Mr. Gwilym Roberts

asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection what study he has made of the rapid increases in car insurance premiums; and if he will ask the Price Commission to carry out a special investigation into prices and profits involved in car insurance together with the associated prices and profits of garages carrying out car repairs.

Mr. Maclennan

Insurance premiums are a matter for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Trade. Under the provisions of the Price Investigation and Examination (Exceptions) Order 1977 I am precluded from directing the Commission to undertake an examination of this sector.

I have no current plans to refer car repairs to the Price Commission, but will bear in mind my hon. Friend's suggestion.
