HC Deb 29 November 1978 vol 959 cc258-9W
Mr. Lomas

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how much he estimates it would cost to have every house rewired up to the recognised safety standards.

Mr. Armstrong:

The cost of rewiring existing dwellings to modern standards will vary according to circumstances, but I am advised that a reasonable figure would be £400.

Wiring installed more than about 30 years ago may need renewal; this could involve up to 7 or 8 million dwellings and a total cost of the order of £3,000 million.
