HC Deb 27 November 1978 vol 959 c20W
44. Mr. Wall

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what would be the estimated effect on trade and the British economy of economic sanctions against South Africa.

Mr. Meacher:

As my hon. Friend the Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs explained in the written reply on 28th June to the hon. Member for Havant and Waterloo (Mr. Lloyd), any wide-ranging economic sanctions against South Africa could have important and serious consequences for the United Kingdom economy, and the precise effect would depend on the nature of the sanction.
