asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many persons are remanded in custody in prisons in England and Wales; and what is the longest period of remand.

Dr. Summerskill:

On 31st October 1978, 3,847 persons were awaiting trial and 2,073 persons who had been convicted were awaiting sentence in prison department establishments in England and Wales. The longest period to that date that any of these persons had been held on remand in custody was 524 days.
