HC Deb 27 November 1978 vol 959 c12W
Mr. Wm. Ross

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list the posts of chief constable which he expects to fall vacant due to the retirement of the present holders during the next 12 months.

Mr. Merlyn Rees:

The normal age of compulsory retirement for chief constables is 65, but a police authority may postpone compulsory retirement for a period not exceeding five years and chief officers may retire before they reach the age of 65. It is therefore not possible to say which posts will fall vacant during the next 12 months.
