HC Deb 27 November 1978 vol 959 cc34-5W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will publish a table showing the average weekly earnings, including overtime, for fitters in the engineering industry in England, Scotland and Wales, respectively.

Mr. Golding:

The following estimates based on the Department's annual tries in June.

England Scotland Wales
Payments by results Payments by results Payments by results
Timeworkers workers Timeworkers workers Timeworkers workers
£ £ £ £ £ £
Toolroom fitters and turners 84.60 88.10 86.10 92.70 88. 90 *
Skilled maintenance fitters 90.70 90.20 95.50 97.10 92.30 104.50
Other skilled fitters 79.40 82.70 86.20 79.80 76.50 92.10
* The number of workers covered by the returns was too small to provide a sufficiently reliable average.

The estimates have been rounded to the nearest lop and are subject to sampling error. Differences in average earnings between regions include the effects of different industrial and occupational structures: they do not therefore give a precise indication of differences in earnings for comparable work.
