HC Deb 27 November 1978 vol 959 c11W
Mr. Arnold Shaw

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether, in view of the recent evidence of organised dog fighting in the West of England, he will bring forward legislation to increase the penalties for such activities.

Dr. Summerskill:

The maximum fine for the relevant offence under section 1 of the Protection of Animals Act 1911 has already been raised from £50 to £500 by the Criminal Law Act 1977. Alternatively or in addition a term of imprisonment not exceeding three months may be imposed.
