HC Deb 24 May 1978 vol 950 cc627-8W
Mr. Spearing

asked the Minister of Overseas Development what help Her Majesty's Government have given to refugees who have crossed from Burma into Bangladesh.

Mrs. Hart

In response to requests received through United Nations channels, my Disaster Unit chartered a plane and flew out medical supplies, clothing and polythene sheeting to Dacca a week ago. The total cost was some £50,000 of which £20,000 was met by members of the Disaster Emergency Committee including Oxfam, Christian Aid and save the Children Fund.

In addition, our High Commissioner has been authorised to offer £10,000 for the local purchase of bamboo for shelter and the Disaster Unit has arranged for more drugs, to the value of some £20,000, to be sent by commercial airline.
