Mr. Fitt

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many persons signing the unemployed register at the Falls Road and Shankill Road local offices in West Belfast, respectively have been unemployed for over one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine and 10 years.

Mr. Concannon

, pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 26th April 1978; Vol. 948, c. 611], gave the following answer:

The "duration of unemployment" statistics which are collected quarterly show that for the Belfast city area at 9th March 1978 the following numbers had been unemployed for the periods stated:

Unemployed over 1 year and up to 2 years 2,964
Unemployed over 2 years and up to 3 years 1,452
Unemployed over 3 years and up to 4 years 606
Unemployed over 4 years and up to Unemployed 5 years 337
Unemployed over 5 years 522

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many young persons under the age of 21 years, male and female, have had training at a Government training centre and have never had paid employment.

I regret that the information is not readily available in the form requested and could not be provided without disproportionate cost.

The available statistics indicate that during the past year 3,671 persons under 18 years of age have received training in Government Training Centres and of this number 2,034 were apprentices who were retained in training until placed in suitable employment. Of the remainder, 38 per cent. of those who completed training were immediately placed in employment.

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many young persons under the age of 21 years, males and females, have had the benefit of training at Government training centres and are now signing the unemployed register at the Falls Road and Shankill Road offices, respectively, in West Belfast.

The statistics which are available cover the Belfast city area and show that at 13th April 1978, 2,383 persons under age 18 were registered for employment. Of this number, 1,520 persons had not been in employment since leaving school. These figures include some 700 Easter school leavers.

The available statistics indicate that during the past year 1,717 persons under 18 years of age received training in Belfast Government training centres, and of this number 879 were apprentices who are retained in training until placed in suitable employment. Of the remainder, 30 per cent. of those who completed training were immediately placed in employment.

(3) how many persons signing the unemployed register at the Falls Road and Shankill Road local offices, respectively, in West Belfast do not qualify for unemployment benefit;

(4) how many persons signing the unemployed register at the Falls Road and Shankill Road local offices, respectively, in West Belfast qualify for the receipt of unemployment benefit;

(5) how many persons, male and female, are signing the unemployed register quarterly at the Falls Road and Shankill Road social security offices in West Belfast, respectively.

, pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 26th April 1978; Vol. 948, c. 610], gave the following information:

The latest available figures for people signing the unemployed registers at Falls Road social security office and Shankill (Danube Street) sub-office of Corporation Street social security office are 6,214 and 2,190 respectively, of whom 187–176 male and 11 female—and 50–39 male and 11 female—sign quarterly; 2,015 and 974 respectively qualify for unemployment benefit; 3,949 and 1,097 do not, of whom 3,894 and 1,052 are in receipt of supplementary benefit. The claims for unemployment benefit of 250 and 119 people respectively have not yet been determined.
