HC Deb 04 May 1978 vol 949 cc222-3W
42. Mr. Charles Irving

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what aid his Department offers to victims of crime.

Mr. John

My right hon. Friend shares with my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland responsibility for the general working of the criminal injuries compensation scheme under which compensation may be paid from Government funds where an applicant has sustained personal injury directly attributable to a crime of violence. In 1976–77, £9,677,389 was paid in compensation under the scheme. The Board is responsible for its own decisions in individual cases. No other form of direct aid to the victims of crime is provided by the Department.
