HC Deb 23 March 1978 vol 946 c655W
Mr. Reid

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what steps he has taken to safeguard production and jobs in the tyre manufacturing industry; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Cryer

The United Kingdom industry, in common with some other countries, has been experiencing a period of low demand, mainly as a result of the decline in the motor industry. The industry has pointed out that this is being exacerbated by a growing penetration of cheap imports, particularly from certain East European countries.

The Industrial Strategy Rubber Processing Sector Working Party is formulating a strategy to improve the performance of the United Kingdom industry. It is paying particular attention to the balance of trade in tyres.

Officials in my Department are in close touch with employers and trade union leaders in the industry. In considering its policy the Government have been helped by the work being done by the sector working party.
