HC Deb 23 March 1978 vol 946 cc694-5W
Miss Richardson

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) why he will not instruct the Commissioner of Police for the Metropolis to keep a comprehensive list of the occasions upon which the nine closed-circuit television cameras referred to in his Written Answer to the hon. Member for Barking—Official Report, 21st February, column 578—and any similar equipment, are used for purposes of crowd control;

(2) on what types of occasions the nine television cameras, which are referred to in his Written Answer to the hon. Member for Barking—Official Report, 21st February, column 578—as being for crowd and traffic control, are used;

(3) on how many occasions prosecutions have been brought by the Metropolitan Police on the basis of evidence obtained from the nine television cameras referred to in his Written Answer to the hon. Member for Barking—Official Report, 21st February, column 578.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

The cameras are used to help the police to keep adequate control at large gatherings of people or concentrations of traffic. These are normal operations which do not call for the keeping of special records. The Commissioner informs me that the Metropolitan Police have not used in evidence material obtained from the cameras.
