HC Deb 23 March 1978 vol 946 cc697-8W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether, as easier conditions in Her Majesty's Prisons may have a bearing on prison overcrowding, he will consider revising the present easier system of imprisonment.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

I do not accept the assumption in the Question that life in prison is easy. Perhaps my hon. Friend would like to visit different types of prisons to make his own assessment.
