HC Deb 23 March 1978 vol 946 c689W
Mr. Brotherton

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what factors were taken into account to determine that the budget for the police national recruitment campaign should be reduced between 1975–76 and 1976–77 by £247,071, and set for the current year at a level of £592,000; and what steps are being taken to ensure that the budget is increased next year.

Dr. Summerskill

The amount for 1976–77 was reduced in the light of the then favourable recruiting situation and the need for economy in public expenditure, and these considerations governed the extent to which provision could be increased in 1977–78. Provision of £793,000 has been made in the budget estimate for 1978–79.
