HC Deb 23 March 1978 vol 946 c690W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department pursuant to his answer to the hon. Member for Louth (Mr. Brotherton) on 1st March, Official Report, c. 240, if "the cost of the Immigration Service since its inception cannot be distinguished" how he controls the costs of the service.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

The costs of the Immigration Service mainly comprise expenditure on staff salaries and allowances. The number of staff is strictly controlled and is no more than is necessary to man adequately the immigration controls at seaports and airports throughout the United Kingdom.
