HC Deb 23 March 1978 vol 946 c703W
Mr. Penhaligon

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give the total remuneration of doctors and nurses in Cornwall for the most recent convenient year; if he will give this figure in pounds sterling per 1,000 population and pounds sterling per 1,000 population over 65 years; and what are the national average figures for the last two years.

Mr. Moyle

The total remuneration of doctors and nurses in Cornwall for 1976–77 was £12,319,000. Comparisons with England are as follows:

Cornwall England
£ £
Per 1,000 population:
Doctors 11,929 13,428
Nurses 18,295 24,192
Total 30,223 37,620
Per 1,000 population aged 65 or over:
Doctors 66,785 93,767
Nurses 102,431 168,935
Total 169,217 262,702

NOTES:

1. The differences in the totals for Cornwall are due to rounding.

2. The figures included for general medical practitioners represent their gross remuneration for the provision of general medical services, including the salaries of nurses employed by them and all other practice expenses incurred by them but excluding payments for dispensing. For other doctors and nurses, remuneration has been taken as gross salaries.

3. In all cases the figures include employers' superannuation and, where appropriate, national insurance contributions.

4. The national figures are influenced by the payment of London Weighting allowance to staff and by the incidence of additional expenditure in the provision of facilities for the clinical teaching of medical and dental students.

5. The population figures used take no account of people who are provided with treatment outside their area of residence nor are they adjusted for differences in the morbidity and age/sex structure of the relative populations.
