HC Deb 23 March 1978 vol 946 c640W
Mr. Churchill

asked the Secretary of State for Defence by how much the pay of a teacher is abated when serving on detached duty in West Germany he is supplied with free accommodation, heating and light.

Dr. Gilbert

Teachers, in keeping with other home civil servants serving in West Germany who occupy official accommodation, are provided with accommodation, heating and light. The cost of these facilities is not met from basic pay but from their foreign service allowance, which is abated to reflect the provision of these facilities at public expense. The abatement would be about £1,100 for a married accompanied teacher and about £400 for a single teacher.
