HC Deb 23 March 1978 vol 946 cc708-9W
Mr. Forrester

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he will make a statement on the Government's proposal for the 1981 Census of Population.

Mr. Ennals

A White Paper setting out the Government's proposals will be published in due course. In order to allow the Registrar-General to take account of the White Paper proposals in the next Census test, the test originally scheduled for 23rd April 1978 in Slough and Weymouth is to be postponed.

Mr. Maxwell-Hyslop

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list the questions which will appear in the 1981 census to be taken at the behest of the EEC, and the reason why the answer to each of the proposed questions is required; and whether the House will have an opportunity to debate and alter the questions proposed.

Mr. Ennals

A White Paper giving the Government's own proposals for the 1981 census will be published in due course, and there will be an opportunity for the House to debate them. The United Kingdom has played a full part in the EEC's deliberations on the 1981 Census, and, where it is reasonable to do so, the Nine will harmonise their questions.
