§ 49. Mr. Silvesterasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the current position on the supply of specialist trained teachers, for the short age subjects of crafts, science, mathematics and religious education.
§ Mr. OakesInformation about the shortage of teachers of these subjects in the current school year will become available in the autumn. In the meantime, 285 additional teachers of craft, design and technology, 170 additional teachers of the physical sciences and 450 additional teachers of mathematics are being trained under the special programmes launched last year. My Department has asked the teacher training institutions to give particular priority to the recruitment of intending teachers of mathematics and craft, design and technology, and to safeguard that of intending teachers of the physical sciences and religious education.
