HC Deb 13 March 1978 vol 946 c9W
Mr. Terry Walker

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what action he has taken to protect the British shoe industry against low cost imports.

Mr. Meacher

Arrangements dating from 1975 onward with Czechoslovakia, Romania and Poland restrain leather footwear exports to the United Kingdom. A quota at an annual rate of 5.5 million pairs was imposed on imports of non-leather footwear from Taiwan in August 1977. In addition, imports into the United Kingdom of leather footwear from Taiwan and all types of footwear from Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Republic of Korea, India, Pakistan, Brazil and the State Trading Area have been made subject to prior surveillance licensing. We are maintaining a close watch on the situation.
