HC Deb 13 March 1978 vol 946 c81W
Mr. Churchill

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science, as a result of the measures at the end of 1976 to reduce public expenditure, what reductions there have been in her Department's budget for 1978–79 at 1978 survey prices; and what percentage of the total budget this figure represents.

Mr. Oakes

The level of public expenditure in 1978–79 for which my right hon. Friend is responsible was reduced by £48.0 millions at 1978 survey prices—about a half of 1 per cent.—as a result of the 15th December 1976 measures; but subsequent changes have had the effect of increasing the Department's programme for 1978–79 by £90.7 millions at the same price base.
