HC Deb 13 March 1978 vol 946 cc8-9W
31. Mr. Terry Walker

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what talks he will be having with the Indian Government about their ban on Concorde flights over that country.

Mr. Clinton Davis

Talks were held in New Delhi last month following the Prime Minister's visit. The Indian Government have decided to refuse permission for supersonic flight over inhabited territory. We understand, however, that the Indian Government are willing to consider supersonic flight across uninhabited territory and this possibily will be pursued.

Mr. Lomas

asked the Secretary of State for Trade by how much the runways would have to be extended to allow Concorde to take off and land at Manchester, Leeds/Bradford, Luton, and Gatwick Airport.

Mr. Clinton Davis

Given the same operating conditions as at Heathrow, the figures are of this order:

Metres
Manchester 800
Leeds/Bradford 2,000
Luton 1,500
Gatwick 500
