HC Deb 02 March 1978 vol 945 cc323-4W
Mr. Freud

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what was the number of regional commercial theatres in 1945, 1950, 1955, 1960, 1965, 1970, 1975, and 1977, respectively.

Mr. Oakes

Precise information for the years in question is not available. It is estimated that there are about 20 regional commercial theatres still in use for theatrical purposes in England, Scotland and Wales today, excluding those which open for summer seasons only, compared with about 130 before the war.
