HC Deb 02 March 1978 vol 945 c323W
Mr. Freud

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will seek to encourage the establishment of art galleries that have as their specific responsibility the display of new work by unestablished artists.

Mr. Oakes

No. The trustees of the Tate Gallery already acquire and display works by contemporary artists, and it is also part of the responsibility of the Arts Council to encourage the development of contemporary art. The Council already makes provision for unestablished artists at its Serpentine gallery and would consider applications for help with proposals to provide similar facilities.
