HC Deb 02 March 1978 vol 945 c321W
49. Mr. Rippon

asked the Minister for the Civil Service what salary it would be necessary to pay the Prime Minister to give him the equivalent, in real terms, of the salary paid to the Prime Minister in 1924.

Mr. Charles R. Morris

The salary of the Prime Minister in 1924 was £5,000. Increasing that figure in line with the movement in the pre-war cost of living index for the period 1924 to 1938, the consumers' expenditure deflator for the period 1938 and 1946 to 1962, and the General Index of Retail Prices for 1962 to 1978 produces a figure of about £48,600.
