HC Deb 02 March 1978 vol 945 cc306-7W
27. Mr. Rost

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the current total fuel bill for all establishments and transportation within his departmental responsibility; what programme is under way to reduce energy consumption; and what is the percentage target of savings over what time scale.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

My responsibility in this context is for prison establishments, and the figures are £10.1 million for the calendar year 1977, with a programme aimed at a 10 per cent. reduction within the next five years. Motor fuels for Home Office vehicles over the same period cost about £590,000, and the need for economy is regularly emphasised. There are nearly 1,000 vehicles, ranging from the heavy local carriers used in the prison service for moving stores and farm produce, down to cars for immigration officers and utility vehicles for the field staff of the Directorate of Telecommunications.
