HC Deb 02 March 1978 vol 945 c314W
Mr. Corbett

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he has yet decided what action to take concerning the use of beagles by ICI in the testing of cigarettes; how many licensed animals are used in such tests; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

My predecessor announced on 11th December 1975—[Vol. 902, c. 285]—that he accepted the advice of the Advisory Committee on the Administration of the Cruelty to Animals Act 1876 that the ICI experiment should be allowed to continue. Latterly 42 dogs have been used in the experiment. On a recent inspection the inspector under the Cruelty to Animals Act 1876 found the dogs to be in good condition.
