Mr. Marten

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, from information available within the EEC, what was the average amount of expenses, including secretarial allowances, drawn by Members of the European Assembly.

Mr. Judd

, pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 26th May 1978; Vol. 950, c. 733], gave the following information:

For 1976, the last year for which final figures are available, the expenses for Members of the European Assembly were published as follows, without further sub-division:

Travel and subsistence allowances, notice of meetings and connected expenditure 2,845,790.60 ua
Members' secretarial expenses 1,188,000.00 ua
TOTAL 4,033,790.60 ua

These sums were expressed in the budgetary unit of account. Divided by 198, the number of Members, and converted into sterling at the rate of £1=2.4 ua, they were respectively £5,988.62, £2,500 and £8,488.62.
