Dr. Hampson

asked the Secretary of State for Employment (1) what is the gross cost and the cost per place of the work experience on employers premises schemes; and how many places will be available in 1978–79;

(2) how many places are available on the other work experience projects programme; and what is the gross cost of the programme and the cost per place;

(3) how many places there will be on the new work experience programme; and what is the estimated gross cost of the programme, the cost per place and the level of grant or allowances which participants receive.

I shall reply to the hon. Member as soon as possible.

Dr. Hampson

asked the Secretary of State for Employment in the last year for which figures are available how many people participated in work experience courses; and what was the annual cost of the programme and the cost per place.

Mr. Golding

I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that during 1977—the latest year for which figures are available—44,810 young persons participcated in work experience courses. The annual cost of the programme was £8 million and the cost per place was £20 per week.
