§ Mr. JohnOn 30th April 1978 there were 41,929 persons in Prison Department establishments in England and Wales. The latest available information on the number of persons sharing cells is for 9th April, when 11,086 were sleeping two in a cell and 4,713 were sleeping three in a cell.
