(2) if he will give, on a regional basis, the average wage of coachbuilders, mechanics, painters and electricians who are employed by regional police authorities to service police vehicles, excluding productivity agreements and bonuses.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

I can answer only for England and Wales. Outside the Metropolitan Police area, employees in these grades are paid rates appropriate to local authority employees of the same class. The information which I have is as follows:

Basic weekly wage excluding bonus and overtime Guaranteed minimum weekly wage
Coachbuilders £43.75 £54.60
Mechanics
Painters
Electricians £44.35 £62.05

In the Metropolitan Police district the rates are those paid to industrial civil servants. These are as follows:

Basic weekly rate excluding supplements etc. Average weekly pay including bonus and allowances
Coachbuilders £43.00 £71.76
Mechanics £43.00 £74.98
Painters £43.00 £62.90
Electricians £43.00 £68.15
