HC Deb 27 July 1978 vol 954 c868W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what research is being undertaken in the United Kingdom into the eye disease, retinitis pigmentosa.

Mrs. Shirley Williams

The Medical Research Council is giving grant support to two research projects on retinitis pigmentosa. One is a study of abnormal retinal physiology in patients with this condition, the other of genetic and clinical aspects of retinitis pigmentosa with the aim of sub-dividing this group of disorders into individual disease states.

The council's clinical and population cytogenetics unit in Edinburgh is engaged in a search for genetic markers for the condition.
