HC Deb 27 July 1978 vol 954 c841W
Dr. McDonald

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will confirm that United Kingdom citizenship to children born abroad in non-Commonwealth countries can only be transmitted down the male line; and if he will indicate what steps he proposes to take to end this discrimination.

Mr. Brynmor John

Under our present law a woman does not transmit her citizenship of the United Kingdom and Colonies to her child born abroad.

The Government expressed the view in their Green Paper on Nationality Law (Cmncl. 6795) that the law should be amended to enable women to transmit citizenship on the same terms as men.
