HC Deb 27 July 1978 vol 954 cc840-1W
Mr. Tilley

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the current extent of overcrowding at Brixton Prison; and if he will make a statement on the measures he intends to take to alleviate it.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

On 11th June 1978, the latest date for which this information is available, there were 1,032 persons held in Her Majesty's Prison, Brixton. Of these, 412 were sleeping two in a cell and 315 were sleeping three in a cell. Facilities at Pentonville for accepting unsentenced prisoners from the London area are being increased and I hope that this will help within the next 12 months to relieve pressure of demand on Brixton.
