HC Deb 26 July 1978 vol 954 cc728-9W
Mr. Morgan

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) in the light of the generally poor state of television reception in the areas of the Ceiriog and Tanat valleys, Clwyd, North Wales, what steps he proposes to take to Improve such reception;

(2) why it has been decided not to proceed with the installation of the promised television booster station at Fronfrys. Glynceiriog, Clwyd, North Wales.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

The broadcasting authorities, which are primarily responsible for providing UHF television coverage, rejected the proposed Fronfrys site because problems of site access and of obtaining adequate signals for rebroadcasting led to the conclusion that a single station to serve the intended area in the Ceiriog Valley would not be feasible The BBC tells me that the possibility of providing two stations to improve reception in the Glynceiriog and Pontfadog areas is being considered, that progress is being made, but that it is still too soon to provide firm information about the future prospects.

So far as the Tanat Valley is concerned, the BBC tells me that, while some parts of the valley are able to receive television services from the Wrekin UHF station, there are still no prospects in the foreseeable future of extending the coverage of Welsh television services there.
