HC Deb 13 July 1978 vol 953 cc734-5W
Mr. Noble

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what undertaking was negotiated between the EEC and the Greek Government under the Multi-Fibre Arrangement regarding imports of T-shirts and singlets; how far this has been observed; and if he will make a statement on the level of recent imports.

Mr. Dell

No undertaking was negotiated with the Greek Government, though the EEC Commission secured assurances from representatives of the Greek industry about the level of its exports of a number of textile and clothing products, including T-shirts and singlets, to Community markets. Recent import statistics showed that these assurances were not being respected, and that the limit on knitted shirts—which includes T-shirts and singlets—had been exceeded. The Commission has therefore imposed quantitative restrictions on certain products, including T-shirts and singlets, into the United Kingdom market, as from 7th July, at the levels that the United Kingdom accepted last December.
