asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the total revenue received from all forms of motor taxation and the amount of Government expenditure spent on roads in each of the financial years from 1974.

Receipts from vehicle excise duty, car tax and excise duties on road fuels in each of the years 1974–75 to 1977–78 were as follows:

1975–76 £2,385 million
1976–77 £2,995 million
1977–78 (provisional) £3,512 million
It is estimated that central and local government expenditure on highway provision, maintenance and administration in the same years, at 1977 public expenditure survey prices, was:

1974–75 £1,852 million
1975–76 £1,879 million
1976–77 £1,651 million
1977–78 £1,441 million
