HC Deb 13 July 1978 vol 953 cc740-1W
Mr. Craigen

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what is the Government's policy towards the development of port facilities on the Clyde in relation to present and future industrial needs.

Mr. William Rodgers

It is my policy, with the advice of the National Ports Council, to encourage all viable schemes of port development by harbour authorities, particularly those designed to meet the needs of local industry. Professional advice is available and government loans can be given in suitable cases if required.

The Clyde Port Authority, as the statutory harbour authority, has prime responsibility for developments on the Clyde and is always ready to serve the needs of new and existing customers. To this end it can always draw upon the help of my Department.
