HC Deb 13 July 1978 vol 953 c730W
Mrs. Hayman

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the latest estimate of the number of one-parent families living in Great Britain; and how the position has changed since 1971.

Mr. Orme

The Registrar-General's latest estimate is that the number of one-parent families in Great Britain has increased from 570,000 in 1971—revised figure—to a figure of the order of 750,000 in 1976, the latest date for which information is available. This represents a 32 per cent. increase over the five-year period. An account of changes in the numbers and family characteristics of one-parent families in Great Britain will appear in the September issue ofPopulation Trends.
