§ Mr. Roperasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the recent negotiations with the Sultan of Brunei about future defence arrangements between the United Kingdom and Brunei.
§ Mr. LuardFollowing agreement on a treaty of friendship and co-operation, the Government will in 1983 relinquish their responsibilities towards Brunei in external relations and defence. Mean-while, the Gurkha battalion will remain, and we shall retain our links with the Brunei armed forces as well as our access to Brunei training facilities.
