HC Deb 30 January 1978 vol 943 c52W
Mr. Moonman

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will make a statement on when research experience is available of the new injection contraceptive to be given in the Basildon Hospital; and what the costs are likely to be in any one full year.

Mr. Moyle

The use of the injected contraceptive Madroxy-Progesterone at Basildon Hospital is not part of a research project or experiment. It has been given to a small number of female patients whose special clinical needs make it a suitable form of contraception. The use of this drug in these circumstances has been approved by the Committee on Safety of Medicines. As the treatment is supplied as a clinical service it is not costed separately, but there are no grounds for suspecting that it is more costly than other forms of contraception.
