HC Deb 27 February 1978 vol 945 c39W
Mr. Anthony Grant

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will set out in the Official Report the names of specialist music schools, the number of pupils in each, and the money by way of grant or other assistance they receive from public funds.

Mr. Oakes

Many schools offer specialised musical teaching to a greater or lesser extent. Information about some of these is included in the recently published report of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, "Training Musicians".

My Department pays grant directly to the following schools to allow them to operate a scheme of fee remission in accordance with parental means:

School Pupils (January 1978) Grant (1977–78 financial year)
£
Yehudi Menuhin 43 82,314
Royal Ballet Lower 117 249,806

Under the terms of my Department's Circular 6/77 local education authorities are free to assist individual pupils to attend non-maintained schools because of their aptitude or ability in music, including singing or dancing, but the amount of assistance given in this way is not known.
