HC Deb 27 February 1978 vol 945 cc64-5W
40. Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Transport whether he has received the communication from the hon. Member for Newham, North-West concerning a statement from the British Safety Council entitled "Wanted a Defective Car"; and what action he has taken, or intends taking in connection therewith.

Mr. Horam

I have read the statement enclosed with my hon. Friend's letter. It concerns a campaign by Volkswagen (G.B.) Ltd. to recall a limited number of Golf and Scirocco models built between mid-1974 and May 1975 so that the steering gear can be examined for a possible fault and remedial work carried out, if it proves necessary. I have offered the services of the Department in contacting owners. I have no evidence of any accident in this country due to a fault of such a kind in the models concerned.

Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Transport why he refused to reply to the approach from the British Safety Council concerning faulty cars being put on the road by motor car manufacturers; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Horam

My right hon. Friend is not aware of having refused to reply to such an approach.
